The Definitive Guide to Muscle Testing: How to Uncover Your Subconscious Beliefs

Muscle testing is essential in my self-healing routine and in helping my clients in private healing sessions. Should you want to self-heal at home, here is a definitive guide to muscle testing.

My introduction to muscle testing came from a somewhat unexpected source—a feng shui master who was helping me improve the energy flow in my home. She taught me how to do the Sway Test so I could muscle test whether the furniture placements she recommended were truly the best for me. I didn't get the hang of how to do the Sway Test on that first try, but some weeks later a friend gave me a crash course on muscle testing. She was getting certified as a Healing Code practitioner and called me over so she could practice on me. Since I was struggling with how to muscle test on my own, she did the Arm Test on me, which is one way of muscle testing with the help of another person.

The Arm Test showed me that muscle testing worked, and the overall experience sparked my interest in energy healing. I went on to learn more energy healing modalities, most of which incorporate muscle testing. Today, muscle testing is the first thing I recommend to anyone who wants to start self-healing.

What is Muscle Testing?

You may have heard muscle testing referred to by other names, such as applied kinesiology or truth testing. It's an effective way of accessing your subconscious beliefs without your ego or logical mind getting in the way.

I mainly use it to access subconscious beliefs, even though I've heard of muscle testing being used in different fields to uncover inner wisdom on mental, physical, and emotional health, as well as testing the energy of spaces, as in the case of feng shui.

The gap between a person's conscious beliefs and their subconscious ones can be vast. My clients are often surprised by the subconscious beliefs that surface during private sessions, just as I am by mine when I work on myself. Since our subconscious beliefs are reflected in our physical reality, the more we shape them in our favor, the more the world responds positively.

Subconscious beliefs are those deeply ingrained thoughts and patterns that influence your behavior, emotions, and overall perception of the world. These beliefs often stem from childhood, past lives, or programming passed down from ancestors, as well as other means, such as societal conditioning or group consciousness. They operate below the level of conscious awareness, making them difficult to identify through introspection alone.

The underlying principle of muscle testing is that our bodies' reactions can be detected through subtle changes in muscle tone. When you say a belief that resonates with your inner truth, your muscles stay strong. Conversely, when a belief conflicts with your inner truth, your muscles weaken.

So How Do You Muscle Test?

There are many ways of muscle testing and plenty of videos on YouTube provide you with clear visual instructions when you search "muscle testing tutorial." This one is pretty comprehensive. For even more options, here is a playlist from the creator of The Healing Code.

Try out different techniques to find which ones you resonate with and give you the most consistent results. Don't be discouraged by the learning curve. As I mentioned earlier, the Arm Test is great for getting started if you can get help from another person. If you are struggling as I did when I first started, ask a friend help you with the arm test so you can show yourself that you can get clear answers from muscle testing. The more you practice, the more you'll trust your answers. For those who are muscle testing on their own, I recommend the Sway Test.

I personally use a pendulum for muscle testing on myself—but I'll delve into that later.

Once you have the muscle testing technique that works best for you, you're ready to begin testing your beliefs.

  • At the beginning of each muscle testing session, calibrate by saying "yes" and "no" out loud. Your "yeses" should be clear from your "nos." You can further calibrate by confirming your name. "My name is (your own name) " and "My name is (a name not your own) "
  • Identify areas in your life where you feel stuck, conflicted, or dissatisfied. Formulate specific, clear statements related to those areas, both positive and negative. "I am a success," and "I am a failure." Even if you muscle tested "Yes" for "I am a success," continue muscle testing the negative statement because you might hold dual beliefs. Write them down. My post on how to heal yourself from home has more tips on finding limiting beliefs.
  • Muscle test to see how your body responds to each statement to identify what you need to work on.
  • Use the energy healing method of your choice to change any negative beliefs to beneficial ones. Then muscle test again to confirm that your negative beliefs have changed to positive ones.

What is Pendulum Testing?

Pendulum testing is another way of muscle testing but with a physical tool. The pendulum is a small weight suspended on a string or chain. As this instructional video states, the pendulum itself is not the source of information. The answers still come from the subconscious mind.

I prefer using the pendulum since I find it very reliable. It's easier since I can be seated and quickly test a bunch of beliefs in succession. However, you do need a bit of energy to get the pendulum moving. If you find that the pendulum barely moves or takes too long to move, you can keep practicing. It's up to you which is the best muscle testing method for you since there are so many options to choose from.

Troubleshooting

If you're not getting clear answers, make sure you are hydrated. If you're tired—whether physically fatigued or overwhelmed from doing much energy work on yourself—your waning energy can also impact the clarity of your results, so make sure to do when you're well-rested.

Saying the statements out loud to receive more accurate results.

If you're doing the Sway Test, facing north can improve results. Once you get good at it, however, you may face any direction.

If you're getting a neutral or unclear response, it could mean that you do have this belief, but it's not so strong, or could simply mean you don't know. With the latter, you may want to find other ways of wording that belief. For example, "I am a success," "I am successful," "I deserve success," "I am primed for success", "success comes naturally to me," etc. They may sound similar but they each have their own nuance. Everybody has their own interpretation of words and statements.

A Note on Muscle Testing

Avoid using muscle testing for predicting the future or trying to read other people's thoughts. For example, questions such as "Will I win the lottery?" or "Does my co-worker secretly hate me?" aren't suitable for this technique. Muscle testing is only effective for uncovering your own subconscious beliefs. Don't drive yourself crazy by expecting more from muscle testing.

The answers you get from muscle testing are from your inner source. It is not a universal truth. For example, if a person has the belief "I am ugly," it is not a fact, but it is their truth. They can change this belief.

Muscle test responsibly, and if you have any doubts, be sure to find a professional energy healer to help you.
