7 Underrated Sitcoms to Stream
These modern sitcoms may not be on everyone's radar, but I find them funnier than most mainstream TV comedies.
I have a preference for shows about moronic and incompetent characters getting into foolish antics. The American sitcoms are already cult favourites, and the Britcoms are massively popular there but just starting to find an audience here through word of mouth.
Derry Girls (2018-)
Stream it: Netflix
I love shows about characters behaving badly, so it's extra delightful when they're Catholic school girls. Set in the 1990s, the five Derry Girls navigate teen life during the Troubles in Northern Ireland.
Much respect to writer and creator Lisa McDee for the dark humour, unpredictable storylines, and '90s nostalgia.
Detroiters (2017-2018)
Stream it: Crave
Sam and Tim are best friends and local ad men making low-budget commercials for small businesses in Detroit. The only problem is, they're both idiots and terrible at what they do.
I'm disappointed this show only got two seasons. Silly and absurd, this is one of the rare shows that make me laugh out loud consistently.
Broad City (2014-2019)
Stream it: Crave
Another best friend comedy, Abbi and Ilana are two Jewish twenty-somethings trying to make it in New York City. This show has a similar tone to Detroiters, and the characters are also imbeciles.
New York is shown in all its grimy and disgusting glory on this show. I was sad when I finished all five seasons because I'd gotten so used to following them along on their city shenanigans.
The IT Crowd (2006-2013)
Stream it: Netflix
Jen talks her way into getting a job managing the IT department in a large corporation, working alongside hapless tech nerds Moss and Roy. But Jen knows nothing about IT, not even what it stands for.
Season 2, Episode 1, "The Work Outing," is one of the best sitcom episodes ever written.
Unbreakable Kimmy Schmit (2015-2019)
Stream it: Netflix
Ellie Kemper plays Kimmy, a doomsday cult survivor starting a new life in New York, but it's more light-hearted than it sounds.
If you like 30 Rock, this show also has Tina Fey as creator and writer, sharing its cartoonish world and kooky humour.
Fresh off the Boat (2015-2020)
Stream it: Prime Video
I had assumed Fresh off the Boat would be a cute family show, but the writing and humour turned out to be clever, sometimes with obscure pop culture references. Some of the Chinese-specific jokes are doubly funny to me, and the show doesn't resort to racial stereotypes for them to work.
After season one, the show really gets into its groove.
Stath Lets Flats (2018-)
Stream it: CBC Gem
Stath Lets Flats is big in the UK, and it's just starting to catch on in North America. Highly incompetent and socially awkward, Stath works at an apartment rental agency only because his father is the owner.
Awkward and cringey, with a moronic lead character and great supporting cast, this is a worthy successor to The Office.
